Director Karunakaran may have been struggling of late, but he is still regarded as one of the finest filmmakers in weaving romantic entertainers. With films like Tholi Prema, Darling and Ullasamga Utsahamga among others, he has created a strong impression on romantic movie buffs and earned the trust of producers and heroes. As the director is now getting ready to take his new film onto floors after a gap of almost four years, speculations have started doing rounds in inside circles that he had lifted the story from a Hollywood film.
Karunakaran's new movie will feature Sai Dharam Tej and Malayali beauty Anupama Parameswaran in lead roles. Tipped to be a romantic entertainer, the film has already been officially launched. KS Rama Rao will bankroll it.
The latest we hear is that the story of this film is inspired/copied from 2012 English movie, "The Vow". The Hollywood film deals with the story of a young man who goes through innumerable hardships to win his love again after his girlfriend loses her memory in a fatal accident. The subject looks quite interesting, a potential story line for a director like Karunakaran to develop it to suit the sensibilities of Telugu audiences.
The story of Karunakaran's earlier film, "Endukante Premanta", starring Ram and Tamannah in lead roles, also had striking similarities with 2005 Hollywood film "Just Like Heaven", leading to speculations that he had inspired from that English film. The Ram-starrer however turned a massive disaster.
For now, speculations are at large that Karunakaran is once again adapting a Hollywood film. The truth however will come out only after the film's release.
On a related note, Trivikram had to pay a hefty price for allegedly copying the story of French film, "Largo Winch" to make "Agnyaathavaasi".
